BOON or BANE?

In this post, I'm going to talk about parents neglecting children and also parents that are over protective, are they doing good or harm to their child?

Firstly, some teenagers these days are turning rebellious, rude and also joining gangs. This is due to the lack of parental guidance and the fact that their parents do not care, or give attention to them. In a teen's mindset, the only way of seeking attention and getting their parents to actually care for them is to find fault, creating the unnecessary trouble. However, parents that normally neglect their children is partly due to the workload, and insufficient time to spend time with their children. One or two days not communicating with the child may not be that serious, but overtime if one does not communicate with another, there would be some distance between each other. This affects the teen, as he/she will think that their parents do not care for them.

Secondly, there are some teenagers that have parents that are overly protective. Parents will not let them out with their friends, thinking that their child would only find trouble with others. Do these parents know that by restricting the child to have at least a little bit of freedom, by forbidding them to go out once in awhile with their friends, they're actually encouraging their child to make online friends over the net? From my point of view, since a teen cannot go out to have the accompaniment of their classmates or real life friends, they only can turn to friends over the net. This is due to the boredom of oneself. Everyone needs to have friends, since they're forbidden to go out with friends and classmates that they actually know, they only can turn to those that they often meet online, that's the only way that they can have friends, because they will feel left out by the real friends, since these teens are always cooped up at home.

Parents being overly protective does not really mean a bad thing though. This simply means that the parents care for their child, and want the best for them. Not wanting their child to end up getting bullied or in trouble. However, being overly protective may also cause the child to rebel against parents. Freedom is what everyone wants, even though it is not that easy to gain it. For me, I think parents should grant their child some freedom, to let them learn self independence, not overly protecting them, if not it will only ruin the child's thinking of their parents. But of course, a parent should not neglect a child as well. Thus, a good mix of these two kinds of parents would be beneficial to their children.

What would be considered as a good parent?
