SINGAPORE : About 1,000 people at AMK Hub in Ang Mo Kio had to be evacuated after a fire broke out on an escalator in the mall on Tuesday.
The escalator connecting basement one to the first level caught fire at about 12.30pm.
Firefighters managed to put out the fire in about six minutes.
However, the mall operator asked everyone in the mall to evacuate as it was afraid the thick smoke from the fire would pose a health hazard.
Business resumed about half an hour later.
The mall operator said it is working with the escalator company to investigate the cause of the incident.
It added that the escalator that caught fire was serviced about a week ago.
No one was injured.
The mall is linked to Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange. Bus services were not affected by the incident. - CNA/ms
During the break just earlier in the afternoon, a few of us from the class happened to pass by the scene at around 3.30PM, it was 3 hours later, yet we still were able to smell smoke. It was quite bad. The glass portion of the escalator was shattered. According to some news, no one was hurt, and all were ask to evacuate the area in case the smoke causes health hazards especially to those with medical breathing problems like asthma.
I think the police actually did a good job in the situation, they cordoned off the area to prevent customers and shoppers from using the escalator. However, the smoke was still unable to be cleared after 3 hours. This could mean it could have been quite bad if the fire department was not informed and aware earlier. Thankfully, we have the police head quarters nearby which indeed helped.
In Singapore, Police stations and fire departments are all almost everywhere, this helps and is really good. IN cases of emergency like the current above situation, having the police stations nearby and all, would really help as lesser people or even no one would be hurt and all would be safer. We should be thankful that we can spot these help zones almost everywhere easily.

Holding a wedding in school may not be new, but this happy couple took it a step further – by inviting guests to turn up in their school uniforms!
Mr Terence Lin and Ms Goh Fang Ying, both 28, met in Temasek primary school, and returned more than 16 years later to hold their wedding at their alma mater.

What's more, at the couple's behest, 40 of their close friends and relatives donned their school uniforms for the special occasion.
"Some of them were very very enthusiastic about the uniform idea and it wasn't difficult to persuade them (to do it)," said Mr Lin, a senior executive.
The unusual wedding ceremony was held in a classroom, crammed with more than 70 guests including many "over-aged students".
Said the bride, Ms Goh Fang Ying, a market researcher: "My husband and I were each others' first loves. We met when we were in Primary Six, in the school garden. We decided it would be meaningful to hold our wedding in the school, to start a new beginning together at the place where we first met."
Using the projector in the classroom, the groom proceeded to present a multimedia presentation on their love's journey, a relationship that spanned 10 years, since university.
"The relationship began when Fangying was in the first year of University, and I was in the army. However, we maintained contact since we left Temasek Primary and went to different secondary schools," said the groom.
Mr Lin was from Victoria School, while Ms Goh went to Tanjong Katong Girls' School. But they were reunited in junior college, when they both attended Victoria Junior college. |
This is an article I found interesting. It is rare to have relationships with someone you knew from primary school. However, this couple is already getting married, after ten years of relationship, and decided to get married in their Primary school in a classroom. The couples relatives and friends were also told to come in uniforms. The couple even wore their uniforms too as the ceremony was held. How sweet is that!
My parents got together during second year of their Secondary school. It has been 38 years since they had been together, and on going. Relationships that are formed in your younger days are rare to keep.
Thus, I found the article interesting. Although they did not get together since Primary school but after university. The thing I found interesting is getting into relationships with someone you know since young.
